My Appalachian Trail Thru-Hike Attempt 2023-2025

A thru-hike is an attempt by a hiker to hike any given trail from end to end. The Appalachian Trail, originally envisioned by Benton MacKaye, is considered the granddaddy of them all. Completed in 1937, it was originally envisioned as a chance to get out and enjoy nature, the Trail eventually evolved into a challenge. Earl V. Shaffer was the first to successfully complete the challenge of a thru-hike in 1948. Every year thousands of hikers attempt a thru-hike, of which only about 20% successfully complete this challenge.This is the chronicle of a 61 year old retired high school teacher from New Hampshire, challenging himself by attempting an AT thru-hike from 2023-2025. Not only did I begin during the wettest season in recent memory of the Trail , but I also had to deal with several injuries that interrupted my attempts. Experiencing the Trail and Trail Life, making new friends, being part of some interesting events, enjoying some fantastic scenery and dealing with the emotional ups and downs of this long challenge; made this a once in a lifetime epic adventure for this retired teacher from New Hampshire.
